Journal 1: Words that Matter

Writing is a creative way of effectively communicating one's thoughts and ideas. Writing is an act of thinking rather than people thinking and then writing. It is a way to express how one is feeling and also a way to pass along information or ideas. Without the ability to write we would have a more difficult time of sharing things, especially if it is something that we do not want to be public. Writing gives us the ability to keep things private, if it is written on paper, for example, because the internet has become a place for people to publicly post things. Writing is more concrete than simply stating something out loud. Writing has a sense of stability that talking does not have. It could be said that writing is a way to represent a person. People are able to express who they are by how they write, whether it be because it is in a different language, what their handwriting looks like, or by what they write on the paper.

Context: This is important because it deals with what the person is writing about and clarifies their ideas.

Knowledge: It is important that the author has knowledge on what they are writing about and how to properly get the message across. Without proper knowledge of their subject the audience will not have a good idea of what they are supposed to gain from reading something.

Emotion: Being able to convey emotion through writing is major because that is what really pulls the audience in. You want them to feel what you are feeling as you write it.

Flow: Keeping a certain "flow" while writing is difficult to achieve. You want your words and ideas to sound like they go together and not like you are jumping from one thing to another.

Organization: In my opinion, being able to effectively communicate ideas comes from how well your paper is organized. Having a paper that is poorly organized makes it difficult to follow.

Medium: Writing can be expressed through different mediums such as through print, on a website, on a video, etc. The different mediums used to portray writing affect how a person views the reading and their own take on it.
