My key term is “genre”. For my artifacts I chose the script of Romeo and Juliet, the “Love Story”
lyrics by Taylor Swift, and the script from the 1996 movie Romeo + Juliet. They are
rhetorically important because they show how different material genres change
reactions as well as construction of the same story. My artifacts also have their own rhetorical
impacts within their specific realms. For
example, the movie Romeo + Juliet is
within Romance/Drama genres of films.
Just being a part of that genre gives the artifact a certain sort of expectation. Genre is a fairly complex topic that can be
taken many different ways. So, overall,
the genre changes so much with the same original material.
Across the artifacts others have I saw some similar and some
very different examples. I did not think
about using physical things like bottle labels.
A lot of people are using media things that are similar to mine because
they concentrate around a central theme.
The only visible trend to me is that they are mostly popular media
artifacts. A lot of the projects are
focused on artifacts that have rhetorically impacted the person working with
them. This is interesting and also plays
into the idea of Edbauer’s rhetorical ecology.
Because the project is so broad there are very different types of
artifacts, but they have all been thought out rhetorically in interesting
ways. The varied nature of the project
is also what makes it exciting.
I think Edbauer’s circulation is very relevant in today’s
media. It is especially relevant in my
own artifacts. My artifacts show the
sort of transition and circulation of a single idea in several forms in
different times. I find Edbauer’s more
flexible idea of circulation to be the most applicable to present
rhetoric. It is important to understand
Edbauer’s ecology of ideas in relation to my artifacts as well. All of my artifacts are connected by
narrative origin. The ecologies around their
individual creations, though, are very unique.
The technologies and reasons for creating the artifacts are all
dependent on outside factors like popular style and resources. Design and material affordances are also very
important ideas regarding this project.
Design will be most important in the final exhibit portion of the
project. The idea of material
affordances is interesting because we are working with print exclusively.
I think it is very interesting how you chose to portray the same story in several different genres. Romeo and Juliet is a timeless example and is great for describing the differences genre makes in the way we perceive the message.
ReplyDeleteI love that you are using artifacts that represent the same thing, but from different time periods and that were directed towards different crowds. As a Taylor Swift fan, I'm excited to read this. And as a fan of rhetoric, I'm excited to see how this plays into the idea of genre. It is also interesting thinking about the different audience that each of your artifacts would have been aimed for. While Shakespeare's play would have been geared towards those in the theatre, T-Swizzle was trying to woo tween girls all over the world. Just interesting to think about audience as well as genre.
ReplyDeleteI think it is very creative that you decided to use the Taylor Swift song as one of your artifacts. I think all three of your artifacts will really play into your keyword very well.
