Journal 3

The term I picked for project one is audience. I wanted to show off through an exhibit how the audience has changed over the years for something worth of news. My three artifacts range over several modes from handwritten, to video, to electronic. The three artifacts I have are a hand written news reports, a news report on the television or radio, and a news report on the internet. All the artifacts are connected in the sense that they would have the same audience, just the way the audience is reached has been changing over the years.

Since we have decided that all forms of texts are rhetoric, my artifacts just emphasize that point. In all three of my artifacts there is something news related. This would be the exigence that is a part of a rhetoric piece. Although there may not necessarily be a call to action in each report, we as a class have decided that by just reporting on the situation makes it known and in its own sense is a call to action. That would be the response that Bitzer is looking for when he talks about rhetoric.

The role of circulation from Edbauer’s article plays a huge part in my three artifacts. Like we stated in class Edbauer’s view on the rhetorical situation is very fluid and thus allows changes and modifications to be made compared to Bitzer’s cut and dry system. Like I said in class, Bitzer had no idea how different our world would be now compared to his. With all of the changes in technology we need a more fluid system to help with the changes that are being made. This is why Edbauer’s role of circulation is so important. It lets the changes in technology have an effect on each text and still be a part of the rhetorical situation. These days you could have the same news article and release it three different ways and the story itself can be perceived in different manners each time. Other people can make an influence on how you view the story, or can literally change the context of said new article. This shows that a fluid system is much needed with the advances in technology we have has since Bitzer’s time.
