I take my three artifacts from three adaptations
of the poem, “somebody almost walked off wid alla my stuff” which is one of
twenty poems of the choreopoem “for colored girls who have considered
suicide/when the rainbow is enuf” by Ntozake Shange. She coined the term “choreopoem”,
to describe her work. The theater piece is a series of separate poems with interconnected
stories accompanied by dance and music.
They are: the poem itself, the poem in the adapted
drama film, and the screenplay version. What is unique of each – and what I
choose to define – is the design of which it is delivered. Differences in the elements
of a motion picture film versus a screenplay, are evident. Moreso, the actress
Loretta Devine delivers the role of Lady in Green in both the film and the
screenplay. One notices the changes made to accommodate the medium.
This is what we can take away regarding
rhetoric, the display of text is appropriate for the medium of which it is
delivered.
Hopefully, through this project, I will conclude
Wysocki’s view on the role of design, as the means of expressing and not
expressing direct mentioning of an overarching theme. What I mean by not
expressing is – especially when comparing three different mediums, is the
acknowledgement of why, in the screenplay, Lady in Green spreads her legs and
in the film, she does not. The “not” is also a contributing factor to analyzing
design.
From Gladwell we can conclude that by clear use
of a material (i.e.. paper to promote creative thinking), it is not a waste, no
matter the advancements.
From Edbauer’s article, we can conclude about
circulation that text has continued conversation between audience, composer,
and other texts, and that this creates a harmonious, ever-changing contribution
to rhetoric.
