Journal 2

When speaking of rhetorical situation, Bitzer says that there are three constituents for any that might occur. The first is exigence, then the audience, and lastly the constraints. An example of this could be the recent presidential election. The exigence would be Trump or Clinton as their purpose was to run against each other to be the president. The audience would be America, or anyone who views/listens to them speak. The constraints would be the people who are against them and vote for the other party or do not vote at all.

Edbauer seems to think very differently from Bitzer, and even uses comparisons to his work in her book. An example of Edbauer's Rhetorical Ecology would be how popular memes are blown up through social media. A simple picture of something that someone finds funny can be shared over and over again by millions of people and become famous overnight.

Edbauer and Bitzer agree on that both see the purpose of exigence and an audience. Edbauer seems to have a more modern, ideal view in my opinion. I would think I agree with Edbauer more after reading her work.

  1. This was very concise.
You explanation of Bitzer helped me understand the reader a lot more. In my journal I had not included his three focus areas: exigence, audience, and constraints.
I also like Edbauer more and used memes as an example for my journal. Your mention of memes reassured me in what I understood!
