JOURNAL 2

Two real life examples that I feel illustrate Bitzer’s rhetorical situation and Edbauer’s Rhetorical Ecology are celebrities promoting a product via social media, such as Kylie Jenner and her lip-kit snap chat stories or the use of celebrities in television advertisements for products, such as Kate Hudson being the “spokesperson” for Fabletics workout clothing.  The use of celebrities in advertisements and celebrities using social media to promote their own products are two pop culture examples of the use of rhetorical situation in real life.  These 2 examples use the idea of persuasion, which is a large part of the rhetorical situation Bitzer created.  Bitzer used persuasion as part of his definition of rhetoric which often focuses on the idea of persuading the audience to believe or follow what the writer is trying to convey to the specific audience they are trying to reach. Celebrities use social media to promote their own products so that their followers and fans want to buy these products.  The same idea is used when a celebrity is used for an advertising campaign you see on television, the company is trying to persuade viewers to buy the product advertised in the commercial by having a celebrity being shown using the product and saying how great the product is.  I feel that when it comes to Rhetoric Bitzer and Edbauer disagree in defining the term rhetoric itself and what that term means to each of them.   Both of them use the idea of the term having elements to it, the two agree on the elements of audience, exigence and constraints however Bitzer views the term as these elements coming together but the elements are not always evident, hence the idea of the rhetorical situation, and Edbauer views the term of rhetoric as the elements coming together and being more evident, a conglomeration.  I also find Bitzer to be more restricting when it comes to his definition of rhetoric than Edbauer who I feel is more fluid and open-minded to his definition of the term, he takes his definition further and expands on the ideas of audience, exigence and constraints more so than Bitzer.

  1. I think this is a great example of how rhetoric is used in pop culture, and your description at the end of how Bitzer and Edbauer differ in their approach to rhetoric.

  2. I really like your examples, especially because I follow both Kylie Jenner and Kate Hudson on snapchat so I'm constantly seeing their promo. Having celebrities promote products is a great use of rhetoric and examples of both Bitzer and Edbauer because they have large fan followings.
