Writing
is a way to share thoughts. It can be an original thought from your head, or
one simply being passed along. Writing is one of the means of sharing information.
It is a way for a person to not just speak and give their knowledge to one
person or a room full of people, but to the world. When knowledge is written,
the information is laid bare, although it may not necessarily be complete. With
writing, thoughts can be added or changed, then shared again without there
being any sort of miscommunication. Writing is a means of not just sharing knowledge,
but preserving it. Entire cultures in human history have been lost because
their way of sharing knowledge and history was through words, not writing. Information
can be incomplete and misunderstood when passed on verbally. It makes me think
of the game ‘telephone’ where you start with a phrase and pass it along around
the room to see how much it changed from beginning to end. This isn’t possible
with writing as there is always a record.
Knowledge:
As I said previously, writing is the best way to preserve information.
Mood:
Not just of the author, but of the reader is important because it alters how
the information will be shared or received.
Detail:
I believe that the more detailed, the better. If I am reading written
instructions to bake a cake and it just says “turn oven on”, that cake isn’t
going to turn out to well, is it?
Consistency:
This is something I struggle with some, and always strive for. Consistency, in
my opinion, is the only reason things get done, in writing and in life. If you’re
someone who is always inconsistent, well isn’t that just a form of consistency itself?
Creativity:
Without allowing yourself to use new words, write in a new style, or read a new
genre, nothing new would ever happen.
