Journal 1

Writing can have many different meanings, depending on who is defining it. Some people believe it is the process of putting words on a page, while others may see it not as a physical action, but a mental one; writing stories or ideas in one's head. Writing evokes emotions in whoever is reading it, or whoever is writing it. The purpose of writing can be to inform, entertain, or persuade. Writing can also be used to express oneself. The key terms I have come up with for writing are as follows:
1. Delivery: Delivery is the way an author gets their point across to the reader. The author may put their thoughts into a piece of writing, or they may choose to speak their ideas in the form of a speech.
2. Composition: Composition is the process in which a writer's ideas are combined into a piece of writing.
3. Purpose: Purpose is the specific reason a person has for writing a piece of writing, to inform, entertain, or persuade.
4. Theme: Theme is the central idea of a piece of writing.
5. Point of View: The point of view is the position or perception in which the events of a story are told to the audience.
I chose these key terms because I believe that they are the most important terms to know in writing. Delivery is important because the it can determine whether or not the author is getting their point across to the audience. Composition is important because in order for a piece of writing to get through to one's audience, the author has to know how to compose words. The author should know how to put together their thoughts and ideas in a way that reaches their reader/s. Theme is important because the reader should know what type of writing they are reading. Purpose is important because the surrounding question in the world or writing is "Why?" In order for a person to be engaged in a piece of writing, they (the reader) should be able to understand the purpose of the work. Point of view is important because it lets the reader know where the author, or character in the story, is coming from; they have some sort of background so they can understand the story or writing better.
