Journal Entry 1

Writing is the act of putting together letters and words representing some type of language on some type of medium. Writing is a form of communication through which people can convey their thoughts and opinions, as well as facts and data. Writing allows people to express themselves in more ways than just orally. Without writing, we would not be able to communicate as efficiently as we can with it, especially with people who are a long distance from us. Writing allows the opportunity to communicate on a larger scale, including people all around the world.

Terms:
Communication: means of connection between people or places. The whole purpose of writing is to communicate. It can have several different purposes, such as to inform, persuade, entertain, etc., but with all those reasons, the sole purpose of the pieces of writing is to communicate a main idea.

Audience: the assembled spectators or listeners. Audience is an important aspect of writing because each piece of writing is catered to appeal to a certain group of people. An author will change his/her style of writing depending on what the topic is about and who the audience is.

Medium: a means by which something is communicated or expressed. There are several mediums through which writing can be communicated, like paper and electronics. The means through which writing is communicated is a major factor is how the audience receives and understands the topic.
Expression: the process of making known one’s thoughts or feelings. In writing, the author is expressing himself or herself, whether it be to inform, persuade, etc. Ideas, thoughts, opinions, facts, data, and more can all be expressed to prove the author’s point.
Main idea: the most important thought about a topic. Every piece of writing has a main idea, that is communicated throughout the work. Without a main idea, there would be no reason to have a piece of writing.
Language: the method of human communication, either spoken or written. Writing would not be possible, nor would have been invented, without language. Language is what is conveyed in writing.
