Journal 1 (356 Words)

By combining words and the use of diction and syntax, writing is a way of putting a complete thought together. Without writing, there would only be audible dialogue in our world. Writing gives us a way to communicate that is beyond the spoken word. If we didn't have writing we wouldn't be able to use computers the way we do, education would have to take a completely different route, and even the world around us wouldn't be the same.
Key terms that define writing:
Medium- Medium is important because in my opinion it helps set the tone. For example, if I receive a hand written letter, I will take it more personal than if I were to receive a text message or email. Medium is also important because of time. If you needed someone to get a message sooner rather than later you would probably do it electronically rather than a letter because it can be sent quicker.
Diction- Diction is a key component of writing because it can be the defining factor to whether someone understands your writing or not. If you use a word incorrectly in a statement, it would be harder to understand. This can separate good writing from bad writing.
Ambiguity- Ambiguity is important to recognize in writing because it helps determine how people understand things. Language can also go along with this because many different languages have words or slang terms that might mean something else when written.
Context- Context is what gives writing a meaning. If there is no context then a piece of writing might be hard to read and understand.
Delivery- Delivery is important in writing because it can help set a tone for what it is about. For example, if you were to deliver a soliloquy you would probably know it is a play.
Style- Style and genre go together in writing. This can help put a piece of work into a group such as romance or comedy.
Arrangement- Arrangement is important for organizational purposes. It helps make sure that everything is in place the way it should be so that a piece of writing makes sense.
