Journal #1

People may have shallow minded views of what writing really entails. Writing is not just simply a string of words but rather an activity that brings about new understandings- it is impossible to write without learning something new about yourself or others. One of the most concise illustrations of writing that I've read says "Writing is a technology through which writers create and recreate meaning". Rhetoric itself is established by its craft of persuasion, this prompts investigation which just creates more exploration through the written word.

In order to define writing using other words, I would say that eight of the most important terms for writing include: creativity, application, argument, interpretation, description.

Creativity: For many, writing is an outlet; a way for individuals to express themselves in their most vulnerable form. Estrem explains how writing is directly connected to thought and so creativity shines through the core of significant writing. Just as thoughts cannot be limited or controlled by societal factors or pressures, nor should writing as it should be an illustration of your inner most heart.

Application: Though the most important element of writing is to believe in your own words, your words hold bearing and should be understood and appreciated by a public and this can only happen through the application of your writing.

Argument: Arguments in writing are constructed to make a point, not to be heatedly discussed and for issues to then arise. Therefore, making sure to fill your writing with evidence and logical awareness will get your point across.

Interpretation: In order for others to grasp the meaning of your work, the author must be able to answer the question, "what is the meaning or significance of the text or event, as I understand it?" The "as i understand it" part is the most crucial part. Being a good writer does not simply mean being able to string pretty words together but rather is a measure of how well the reader can grasp the illicit meaning behind the words printed on the paper through feeling the words and living in your moment.

Description: For practical purposes, this is also a very important concept for writing. As the author, you are expected to paint a clear picture of what something looks like, feels like, tastes like...because again the reader is not in your head and it is your job to get them there.
