Journal 1: Words That Matter

Writing can take a nearly endless variety of forms, and its purposes range from communication to entertainment, and everything in between. In a literal definition, writing may be described as simply putting words on a page to form sentences, but it is so much more than that. Writing is a meaningful method of communicating and sharing ideas, knowledge, stories, and experience. It is a method of instruction or direction. It is a form of art, and a blank medium that can be shaped into anything a writer desires. It can be anything that it is made out to be, and used in any way imaginable. Words can be made into art with poetry, or they can be academic and professional. They can ignite a person’s creativity, and inspire people to do anything. Writing is immensely important in achieving anything, in both personal and professional environments.

• Art: Words can be arranged in a multitude of ways, but each unique combination is the product of the individual person’s artistic choices. Because of these choices, no two pieces are ever the same, even if they are made to seem similar.
• Expression: Writing is a reflection of who someone is, what they believe in, and how they express themselves. Through writing, people are able to display a side of them that may ordinarily be hidden from the world.
• Transformation: Writing is the transposition of a person’s soul onto a piece of paper or word document. It is a way of taking the intangible thoughts of any individual and displaying it in a medium that is almost universally understood.
• Connection: Writing unites people everywhere, in spite of physical distance. Letters and emails can reach almost anyone across the globe, while the content of certain writings can create meaningful connections within and between anyone who reads it.
• Commitment: Writers must have the commitment to apply themselves to their pieces. It takes patience, motivation, and dedication to compose any piece of writing, whether it is a formal email, a short story, or a grocery list. Authors must also stand by what they have created, and stay committed to their creations.
