Magic of Writing - Toner

Defining “writing” is a difficult thing to do. It is one of those questions that everyone knows the answer; just most people don’t know the correct way to say it. That’s probably because there isn’t a right or wrong way to define writing. Writing is very unique and what it means to each individual person varies. To me, writing has always been a way to express one’s self. Writing and literature also give people hope and inspire them.

Magic: Writing is magic and I’m convinced of it. Read any great fantasy work by Tolkein, Lewis, or Rowling. They’re all magical and transport a human into an alternate universe that is so real to readers. Allen Moore, famous graphic novelist, once said, “I believe that magic is art, and that art, whether that be music, writing, sculpture, or any other form, is literally magic. Art is, like magic, the science of manipulating symbols, words or images, to achieve changes in consciousness ... Indeed to cast a spell is simply to spell, to manipulate words, to change people's consciousness, and this is why I believe that an artist or writer is the closest thing in the contemporary world to a shaman." This is so true because weather it’s a book you’re reading, or music, both of these forms of writing can bring new life and hope to someone.

Persuasion: Writing is very persuasive, whether intended to or not. Often an author’s writing is their opinion or imagination. This is them putting their thoughts and beliefs through words into your head, again whether they intended to or not. A lot of times this will persuade or push people to think a certain way.

Fluent: This isn’t the case for all writings, but it is the case for pretty much all-great writings. They flow and make the reader want to continue to read. This is an important element to writing because if you cant keep a reader’s attention then it isn’t a good work.

Creativity: The best writings are ones that are creative. Creative writing is often one of the most enjoyable types of writing to read because it makes the reader think more and draws them into it so much more.

Art: Writing is the most beautiful form of art. Music, books, poems, etc. are all forms of art that can fully captivate a human’s emotion in just a few words.
