I do not think that there is one, cookie-cutter definition of the term “writing.” To me, I think it means multiple things. First, I believe that writing is a way to express oneself. Most of the time, people write to convey their own internal thoughts and feelings. It is a way to share a part of themselves with the world. Second, I feel that writing is a way to transport knowledge to readers. Whether it is about something extremely serious or not, writing gives us the power to make others aware. Third, writing can be a form of convincing or persuading. Nowadays, I think this aspect of writing is very important due to all of the outrageous things that have been going on in the world lately. Overall, it is a way of communicating one’s opinions and it gives writers an outlet. It can even be a stress reliever! I truly believe that the definition of writing is whatever one makes it. With writing, people have the power to say what they feel and that is beneficial in so many ways. Everyone has his or her own, diverse purpose.

Creativity- There are many different forms of writing. There’s essays, articles, poems, narratives, etc. The genre of writing is chosen based off of the writer for a specific reason. They get to choose everything about what they are writing and make it their own.

Expression- Since writers get to choose what they want to write about, it is a great way for them to express themselves. Writing is a healthy thing to do if you are going through something difficult or if you just want to share something you feel strongly about to the world.

Outlet- Again, writing can help us get through harder times by writing down how we are feeling. It is a healthy way to get out if we are feeling angry or sad. It’s also great to write down if you are feeling happy because it is documenting the events that are taking place in your life!

Communication- Writing is simply a way to communicate. Whether I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird, or The Rhetorical Situation by Bitzer, I am gaining some type of knowledge that I did not have before. Every writer writes with his or her own ideas and purpose in mind.

Persuasion- Writing is a smart way to attempt to persuade people on something. When a piece has a strong voice, it is easy to view the author’s perspective.
