Journal #5

I define writing and composing as the art of communicating using different mediums such as text, media, art, etc.  By writing and composing you are sharing your work with others, whether it be thoughts, ideas, opinions, actions, stories, facts or more and essentially conveying a message you want the audience of the work to understand.  Writing is doing so using words or text, while composition focuses on someone’s style and that style changes for each individual and the work they create for others to view.  When someone composes or writes they want to convey a message of some sort to the viewer of their work.  My prior experiences with writing and composing have caused me to focus on who is viewing my work that I have created.  When I write or compose I try to think of what the reader will take away from the piece, the audience I am trying to reach with the works and what the message I am trying to convey to the reader is.  If you don’t have an audience then I feel that a piece of writing or media is not successful because then there is no point to the work, no message being taken away or understood.

Key Terms that I think with when writing or composing are audience, creativity, process, style, and genre.  As I stated above I always think of audience when I write or compose because that is who is viewing or reading the work you create and therefore your biggest critic and who is supposed to take away a message from the piece.  Creativity is important to ensure what you write and compose is always new and current.  Process is important because the steps you take in writing and composing are important to the success of the piece of work.  Style is important because it is unique to each author and composer and it is what makes the media each person creates unique.  Genre is what makes people want to view and read a persons work, it gives the audience an expectation of what they are about to view or read and can cause a person to want to view a piece or work or not.
