Journal 5

I define writing and composing as the process of creating and sharing ideas through text. This text doesn’t necessarily have to be in written word, but it should communicate these ideas in an effective way. Whether it be an assortment of images, written word, or a combination of the two, writing and composing can take a number of forms. It can be presented digitally or through print. It can take the form of a blog post, a book, a caption for a painting, or a seemingly infinite number of forms.
After finishing project one, I can now see the importance of writing and all of its components. Each aspect of writing and composing contributes to how it can be interpreted and how it circulates. Through this project alone, I can see how the same term can be defined through a variety of different texts and displayed in a number of different mediums and print forms. They are many different forms print text can take that all try to accomplish the same goal. The ability to choose to display this exhibit in any way we want, allowed me to see just how many different forms print can take. There are so many different ways to display text and each allows for text to be presented and received in a different way. To me, the Artist’s statement for project 1 was a map for my exhibit. It forced me to think through each of my artifacts and helped determine whether or not the way in which I had chosen to display them made sense. I was able to review all of my research of my key term, and connect them to each of my artifacts; explaining how each of them help define it in a logical manner.
Key terms for writing:
·       Audience: Who will see your writing/text? This is important to consider because it changes the way in which you approach your writing.
·       Genre: Each of the small elements of a text come together to create the text itself. Braking down all of the aspects of a text and seeing how they relate to one another allows the composer of a text to have a deeper understanding of their work.
·       Purpose: Why are you writing? Every writing starts with an idea and a desire to share and communicate this idea to others.
·       Circulation: How will this text be received?

·       Medium: What form will the text take? There are millions of ways to display writing and text, so what is the best way to communicate your idea(s)?
