Journal 5

Since the key element I chose to explore was design, my eyes were opened up to define writing/composing much more broad.  To me, composing is much more than writing.  In fact, composing doesn't have to include writing at all, it can be strictly visual images.  One of my artifacts actually only had the text "FSU' on it, and I had to explore the image to grasp the rest of the design.  My definition of writing and composing is that it exists in images, colors, organization, and everything in between.  There is a great deal of thought put into a piece of writing or a composition by the creator.  Their creative process must account for how their audience will take in the design.  For example, something that I explored with Facebook is that a simple color scheme of one tone will appeal to a viewer much more than a busy color scheme with contrasting colors such as red and blue.

My prior experiences with writing/composing have been heavily focused on visual elements of design.  I have taken art classes my whole life, finally at the college level.  I have learned about space, color theory, effective composition organization, and much more.  That is the main reason I chose design, I felt like I had such a history with it.  A lot of things I learned through my research of design I already knew, such as the importance of pairing certain colors together.  However, something I was not too familiar with was digital design.  Everything I had composed or studied was a tangible composition I could look at right in front of me.  There are a lot of different things that go into the thought process when composing a website rather than composing an art piece.  For example, the creator must take into account the fact that the viewer of their website will be able to interact with it.  The scrolling and the typing areas must be easily accessible.

While writing or composing, I think of some key terms.  My main element is design.  Besides that, I guess I could say I initially think of font, because it is so crucial in how it affects the viewer.  In addition, I think of space, organization, color, and textual content as key elements when it comes to creating.  All of these things can affect an audience in whatever way the composer choosing to display them.
