Genre

Journal 4

The role of genre in creating a text is that it is an organizational tool and a determinant of the kind of defining conventions that you should implement into your text, in order for it to fit into a certain genre. Every genre has its conventions that categorize it as a particular genre. The role of genre in creating a text also determines the kind of utensils, characteristics or online applications that you use to create your text, so that your text may be characterized as a certain genre. For instance, a music album may be characterized as a country music album. The Country music genre has conventions that define it as a genre that is independent of other genres such as classical music and pop. Ultimately, genres judge a text and characterize it into the genre that best fits the text’s conventions, ultimately organizing texts into their fitting genres.

When we compose something, we tend to try and fit our work into the intended genre that we are aiming for, depending on who our target audience is and the content we are creating. Many famous singers and songwriters know that they should stick to a particular genre when it comes to creating a song because it will cater to a larger audience. For this reason, this is why songwriters refrain from creating songs that mix genres such as classical music with rap and country all into one song.

County music, rap, pop, jazz, classical music, etc., are all genres that are related to each other because they are all types of music. There are genres and sub-genres. In this case, the genre is “music” and the sub-genres are pop, country, etc.

Genres are related to audience because certain audiences are attracted to and prefer certain genres over the others. For example, you would probably not thrill country-concert tailgaters by blasting pop music that overpowers their country music. That is because the country audience favors country—not pop. This is why we must meet the needs of our intended audience by catering to them through the outlet of the genre of their choosing.

Genre choice impacts the circulation and distribution processes because some genres are easier to circulate as opposed to others. For example, a meme would be easier to circulate around the internet as opposed to a poster-board project that you made for class.
