To
start, Arola uses Deleuze way of describing bare repetition as a type of
repetition consisting of the same element, one who’s governed by nostalgia. As
an example, she states that bare repetition can be seen as performing a fancy
dance in the same way as your ancestors. A more personal example for me would
be the bible. Growing up saying my prayers was something big and I constantly
had to say them before bed as well as other situations, then I didn’t know that
my prayers were considered as a bare repetition.
In order to make an assemblage ethical the
author must combine an aspect of something, then take another familiar aspect
and combine it so that it is still accurate from the original borrowed piece. In
the words of Arola, an ethical assemblage “is a process of repeating that pays
homage without insisting upon essences”. An example of an ethical assemblage
would be the marvel series. I choose this as because marvel benefits everyone.
They have the marvel series as rides at local theme parks, party supply
material with the marvel characters and even some books are marvel series. On
the other hand, harmful assemblages can be seen as unethical and should always be
recognized and challenged, seemingly to those who are strong in their cultural society.
This contributes to the audience in ways of reenactment of past cultural
activities.
In some ways, fair use does have
some indications when it comes to assemblages because objects and text are used
from previous works being put together and used to create another piece. Fair
use enforces that no one can copyright your ideas. It doesn’t allow someone the
ability to take credit for someone else’s work. I do believe that circulation
can affect assemblages ethical status because it’s being shared and recreated
all over which gives it a whole new meaning to someone else’s work; this now
gives assemblages several different meanings. Distribution and circulation put
authors in a spot in which they become aware to a good from a bad assemblage. It
shows you how it is being distributed to the world and how often it is going
around through digital media.
