Journal 4 Geraghty


Genre is the foundation of texts. Consumers look to quickly put things into categories to better understand the contents, therefore genre is the first thing that readers consider. That goes for both genres related to modes of content as well as actual text. Modes play a big role in the initial consumption by the reader as it is often the thing that draws consumers to the texts. Because of that, it needs to be appropriate modes for the text.
Just like readers looking at mode to categories the content they are reading, composers need to decide the right genre to place their content in to get the most value for what they are trying to convey. Once again, genre is the foundation of a text and that needs to be established before the process begins. Every genre has a set of conventions that need to be met in order to successfully fit into that category.
When choosing a genre, purpose and audience should be some of the first things considered in that process, because audience is what makes a purpose successful. Therefore those components need to be cohesive. Genre needs to be conventional for its audience in order for it to be understood. There may be different genres mixed within on given texts, however there should be one grand genre that links them all together. Finding the right genre for the right audience is what puts value behind a text. A campus alert sent in a 500 word email might lose value because some of its readers might not check their emails immediately, nor will they be willing to read a full email. In that case an emergency text sent directly to student's phones with a 20 word alert would have much more effect because the genre matches up with both the audience, circulation, and purpose.
Genre helps circulation grow, because sometimes readers like to stay within one genre and therefore keeping it within that community. Also people who like that genre might recommend it to other people who are looking for that genre and therefore increasing that circulation. Distribution effectiveness works proportionately with mode and audience because proper mode gets distributed in the proper way finding the proper audience.
