Journal 8

After watching all the presentations I realized the name of the game is circulation and audience. Getting the word out there and having your assemblages seen is how you determine success. Circulation also does not have to be for a mass audience, but rather your specific audience. A lot of groups chose social media because their audience was college students. This meant their assemblages wasn’t meant to circulate through millions of people. The assemblage was only meant to reach that small demographic in order to reach success. So in terms of circulation, it depends on the audience you’re aiming for.

A lot of the teams used social media profiles and info graphics to reach their audience. I thought those were clever routes since you not only have to truly know your organization to succeed in making these assemblages, but it increased the chances of someone seeing their artifacts. Someone could easily stumble on one of his or her profiles or flyers when on Facebook or Instagram. Social media really is the best route to have your work seen, but it could be lost in millions of other social media profiles. This wasn’t the groups’ main constraint however. A lot of the groups suffered with communication. The recurring issue was the lack of communication between the organizations and groups. A lot of the time groups took liberties in their work, because the organization would not reply, and then later find out they weren’t able to make that decision. That lack communication really brought a group’s morale down.

However in order to compose a successful campaign, a lot of the groups looked at genre, circulation, networks, materiality etc. in terms of audience. All decisions made were based off how successful it would be with their specific audience. How would their audience approach the artifact? How would they share it? Who would they share it with? These were the questions a lot of the groups took into consideration.

After the presentations, I realized my group probably should’ve chosen different artifacts. They were effective and we created a twist with them, but due to the amount of other social media sites it probably wasn’t the most original idea.
