Writing is the process of putting
thoughts, ideas, and words to paper. Editing is the process of tweaking,
moving, shifting, re-creating, and re-fleshing those ideas to make them as
clear, precise, and as powerful as
possible. Composing is the act of creating and forming a text. I think that
while that definition is simple, it is open ended and requires interpretation.
You can ask how, why, under what conditions, and for what? But those questions
can be answered in many different ways. I
think one of the words that stuck out to me as a key term is process. I think
that writing, editing, and composing are all a part of a never completed
process. Sometimes even a text we love needs to be refined and altered. As
writers and thinkers, we are constantly striving to do better, which is our
process. My experiences with Project Two had to do with this idea a lot. I went
from having a simple idea of composing to realizing its vast majority of moving
parts. Circulation, Network, Exigence, Voice, Audience, and Genre were things
that I probably wouldn’t have thought of before, but have now become such an
important part of the conversation of composing to me. I actually just finished
writing and editing a piece for one of my other classes, Article and Essay
Techniques. After turning in my paper to the rest of the class and allowing
them to peer edit my piece and then give me feedback, I realized how important it
is to consider your audience, your purpose, and your voice. While they all
loved my piece, they definitely gave me some incredible feedback that has
allowed me to edit and better my piece. I think this is a great example of the
term process. An artist’s work is never done. I think I’ve come to appreciate
the term audience. An audience can determine your entire piece. It is so
pivotal to understand and create for your audience or what was the point of
writing in the first place? Knowing the emotions, feelings, mind sets, and standpoints
of your audience is key in making a better writer.
