Journal 7

I would define writing as putting together a series of words and thoughts to convey a meaning to an intended audience. I would define editing as the process of revising and changing previously formulated thoughts to be more coherent and concise. I would define composing as the creation of a text that is intended to deliver a message or idea to an audience.
Key terms that are needed for writing, editing, and composing are arrangement, coherence, audience, and focus. I believe these words all contribute to the success of writing, editing, and composing. Without proper arrangement and coherence, the message that is being given to their audience will not make as much as sense and may not be interpreted the way it was meant to be.
Most, if not all, of the assignments and activities we have completed throughout the semester have affected my definitions of these terms. However, project two helped me place a great deal of emphasis on coherence and arrangement rather than perspective. The intent of the message I was attempting to deliver was unclear until reading my artist statement. This was not necessarily a bad thing but if I had made a clearer, stronger connection between the elements of my project it might have been more successful.
Yes, outside experiences have shaped my definitions of writing, editing, and composing. This semester I am also enrolled in rhetoric which has a few overlapping themes as WEPO. After completing various readings and assignments for this course I have realized that my definitions of these terms were not as solid as they are. This is because I have developed a fuller, more significant understanding of these words and their relationship with each other.

A change that I have made in my theory of composition from week two to now is the emphasis I placed on perspective vs arrangement/coherence. Although perspective in composition is important, I would now place more importance on arranging a text in a way that is clear. The coherence of a text is essentially what will affect the delivery and interpretation of the message with the intended audience.
