Journal #7

I define writing as marking words on paper to convey an idea. I define editing as correcting and modifying content that already exists. I define composing as writing/drawing/assembling ideas, whether it be text, pictures, etc. and displaying it. Key terms that are necessary for defining writing, editing, and composing are: audience, medium, text, purpose, and circulation. It is important to keep in mind audience when considering those concepts, as what type of audience an author is working with determines the content of the texts. Medium is important because that is what type of material the author is going to display their content on. Text is important  because that is the content of the author's thoughts, and is what the creation is about. Purpose is very important, as that is the reason the author is creating their piece. An author needs to have a distinct purpose in mind in order to make their content meaningful. Lastly, circulation is important because that is how the author will share his/her content. It can be physically distributed, or even digitally shared, along with other modes of distribution.

Project two helped me understand how someone can take something that already exists and change it into something else. The medium changed, the purpose changed, and it gave the work a new purpose. I took a rhetoric class last semester, and that helped me to understand these concepts as well. Since week two of this course, I have learned that composing is more than just writing. Previously, I always thought of it as writing music or text, but now I understand that composing can involve more than just writing. Composing can be creating text, images, assemblages, digital media, etc.
