Journal 7

As for the terms "writing" "editing" and "composing" I find those words to have different meanings, however, they are all connected. Writing, to me, is the act of putting down words. Not necessarily in an orderly fashion or in a way that they have meaning. Writing is when someone is putting down whatever the first thing that comes to mind is. When they are done putting down their thoughts, then comes the "editing" part. Editing comes after the writing part has been done. Editing is when someone goes back and revises their text in order to make them into one statement that will reach their audience in the way that they intend to. Composing is the act of coming up with what you want to write about: getting a topic and figuring out how to organize the thoughts in a way that will come across logically to the audience. The key terms that are necessary for these words are communication, audience, and purpose. Communication is important because it is necessary in order to get your point across to the audience. I believe the author needs to know how to communicate their thoughts in a logical and understandable way in order to get their point across. Audience is important because the author needs to know who their audience is, or at least, who they are attempting to reach. Without the author having an audience in mind while writing, composing, and editing, the piece will not have as great of an impact when it is published. Not many people will be able to understand or be able to relate to the piece because it it tailored to everyone and not a specific group of people. Purpose is important because writing, editing, or composing can't happen if there is not a purpose behind it. Project two changed my perspective on writing, editing, and composing. I found that it is a lot harder than it actually sounds. I found it difficult sometimes to take my thoughts and make them into something that my audience would be able to understand. Outside of this course, I realize that there are a number of different audiences that a work could be written to, not just the people in the course or people who go to FSU. Something that has changed about my theory of composing is that the author needs to think about the different mediums that they want to portray their ideas on. People might view someones work differently online than they would in an article in the newspaper. I realized this in project one when trying to figure out the medium I wanted to work in.
