Journal 4- Genre

When I think of 'genre' I think of the different catagories things are split up in to. For example, music on iTunes is split into different genres including pop, hip-hop/rap, country, indie, world, etc. Along with music, books, tv shows, and movies are all split up into different genres. Look at the bigger picture of what a genre actually does for you? If you want to watch a funny movie on Netflix you're going to look in the Comedy section and not the Romance section for instance. Another example would be someone looking for new country music on iTunes. They aren't going to click on HipHop/Rap genre when looking for country. It helps you better understand something. I have learned in this class that the term 'genre' is much more than a catagory. Genre is any medium that can be used to convey anything like information, pictures, thoughts, etc. It is a very important part of the process of reading ot writing.
When writing, one of the main goals is to please the audience, whehter that be yourself or another person(s). For example, a country singer isn't going to sing about things a rapper is going to rap about per say because it would not be pleasing to their audience. In simpler terms, genre is used to better understand a text one is reading, writing, listening, etc. It allows you to grasp the bigger picture or an overall idea, rather than just catagorizing things.
